This year, I am participating in Movember. It’s something I’ve talked about doing for several years, but never got off my butt and actually did. Until now. There are several reasons why. First, my dad passed away earlier this year. While lung cancer was the ultimate cause, he was suffering from prostate cancer in the last few years as well. Then there is Doug, a great friend who passed away recently from prostate cancer. I’m doing this to honor their memories, and hopefully help out the cause a little bit.
I also have a fun reason for doing this. My cousin has a company called Broquet, where they sell some really cool gifts for guys. One of them is a shaving kit, and when I saw it I decided I had to have a reason buy and use the thing. The chance to play with sharp objects and whiskey scented stuff was too good to pass up.
So, there it is. My Mo Space is here. Follow along, and if you are so MO-tivated (get it!?!?), donate to my Mo Space to help the Mo fight the good fight. I intend to have a hell of a good time with this, and I hope you do too.
So, even though the Pirates lost to the Cardinals last night in game 5 of the NLDS, they had one hell of a season; the culmination of the last three seasons of work and build up that began when Clint Hurdle took the reigns in Pittsburgh.
Last year, I said I fully expected the Bucs to have their first winning season in 20 years, and hoped for a solid run at the playoffs, as long as they didn’t start handing out pink slips as punishment for their late season implosion. They held it together, made really good additions to the team throughout, and got their over .500 season. What I didn’t really expect, though, was how strong a run in to the playoffs they’d make on such an outstanding effort by the entire team. Last year, Andrew McCutchen held just about every team record, possibly including some pitching ones. I figured he’d be the single standout again this season as well. Nope. This year, with outstanding efforts from the whole team, those records were spread across multiple players, helping push the Pirates well in to October.
The team is on a roll. I’m looking forward to year four even more than I was year three. I think the team will largely stay intact over the off-season, giving them a good shot at a strong start. Hurdle and team management seem to have figured out the formula for success. As long as they continue to apply it, 2014 will be even more fun than 2013.
